A Little Bethesda History
from William
Offutt's Bethesda - A Social History
Prewar Boom (WWII)
...When they were over, most folks agreed
that the years just before the war had been the best yet for
Bethesda. The building boom in single-family houses hammered
along without a letup, and new businesses confidently opened at
the rate of nearly one a week. The already-busy NIH and the
planned U.S. Navy hospital promised to bring in many more
families and jobs as well as filling the cash registers, schools
and churches.
In the town's multiplying auto
dealerships, lights gleamed on some of the sleekest and
best-built cars ever. Imirie, Eastham and Burrows soon had
plenty of competition as one gas station seemed to start pumping
every month somewhere along Wisconsin or Old Georgetown. Bob
Guillot's Sunoco service station at East West and Wisconsin was
on its way to becoming a Bethesda landmark. He advertised “A to
Z” lubrication in thirty minutes for seventy-five cents and
offered to call for and deliver your car at “no extra charge."
The Coke box in front of his office was always filled with icy
water and soft drinks, and it soon became a popular place to
grab a Nehi orange or Cherry Smash. Coca Cola drinkers always
checked the bottom of their bottle to see how far away it had
come from.
